I left Jozi to head home this morning, after a short time of city chilling. I didn’t make a decision about the route I was going to take because I wanted to just drift again, so when I reached the split of the N1 via Bloemfontein and N12 via Kimberley I let my SX4 decide, and it turned out to be the N1. Which was very cool, because otherwise I would have missed the flash mob dancing me out of Jozi. Maybe they weren’t dancing me out. I’m not sure that it was even a mob, actually. It was really just one guy standing and dancing on the grassy strip in the middle of the North and South bound freeways. I was playing that song “No more tears – enough is enough” and there was this random guy with headphones on, dancing to the exact same beat, as I drove by. I really did expect fifty people to suddenly appear and start dancing along with him. Then I would have waved and smiled and maybe cried a bit. It didn’t happen. Only in my head.

Oh and I ran over a fairy train on the N1. It was so weird. I was driving along and this red train (I call them fairy trains because they remind me of my childhood storybooks) was approaching the tunnel that went under the freeway, at a right angle obviously. It felt like slow motion as we approached each other. And at the exact moment that I drove over the tunnel, the train rode into the tunnel, and so I did drive over the fairy train. It seemed like this perfect synchronicity of movement. I can’t describe the feeling of excitement and joy that I felt in that moment. I don’t even know why that brought me joy. Driving alone for so many weeks and thousands of kilometres must have something to do with it. That was a very cool moment.

Driving along the N1 can be super boring nothingness though, so I really appreciated the treat of a beautiful rainbow and a van Gogh sky along the way. I landed this afternoon at Gariep Dam but didn’t even have a chance to see the dam, because I had urgent work to do. I’ll have a look tomorrow and let you know what it’s all about. Also, I have a very bizarre story to tell you about tonight’s accommodation.
